Obituary:
ISAAC C. HOUCK - The veteran retired Pennsylvania railroad policeman, who was stricken with apoplexy on a Seventh avenue street car Thursday evening, November 8, died at 11 o'clock Saturday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.H. Wright, 2016 Fourth avenue. Isaac C. Houck was born in Trough Creek, Huntingdon county, May 25, 1827. His early life was spent in farming and in teaming. After spending a number of years in his native town he moved to Williamsburg. Many years were spent there, after which he moved to Hollidaysburg, and from that place to Altoona. May 10, 1849, he was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Walters [sic], in Huntingdon county, who died a number of years ago. In 1884 he moved to Altoona, where he had been employed for some time before. For twenty-five years he was an officer for the Pennsylvania railroad and in this vocation he became known all over the United states as the terror to tramps. Those who were well acquainted with him recall many daring exploits in connection with the performance of his duties and on several occasions he faced death while attempting to place dangerous characters under arrest. Six years ago he was placed on the retired list. Four children, Mrs. H.H. Wright, with whom he resided since the death of his wife, Mrs. Clarence H. Rhodes of Altoona, Homer H., of Trenton, N.J., and Samuel R. of Lancaster, O., survive. Twenty-two grandchildren also survive, together with three brothers, James H., William A. of Altoona and Samuel D. of Washington D.C., and two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Stevens and Mrs. Kate Shollar. He was a follower of the Methodist family since boyhood and at the time of his death was affliated with the Eighth Avenue Methodist church. Public funeral services will be held at the home of his daughter, 2016 Fourth avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. A special car will convey the body to Hollidaysburg at 3 and private interment will be made in the Presbyterian cemetery at that place.
